1. 20 years on from the Flavr-Savr® Tomato: The US Push and Pull of GM-food Labelling in the USA

The year 2014 marks 20 years since the first GM (genetically-modified) food – the FlavorSavor™ tomato –  was launched.  In the USA, GM-food labelling discussions are more rife now than they ever were in 1994. Despite US federal legislation to the contrary, some groups of consumers, producers and elected representatives have created ingenious means to have GM-derived food, or moreover, non-GM derived food, identified as such in the US marketplace.   This session will provide a brief overview of GM-derived food labelling legislation in specific countries and, will feature the  various initiatives undertaken by some American stakeholders to have GM-food and non-GM food identified at point-of-purchase.   It bodes the question – will there be a spillover effect into Canada?
