Health & Innovation Series: ”Changing The Way Healthcare Is Delivered, One Doctor At A Time”

In this age of hyper-connectivity, as more and more patients are taking control of their healthcare by researching and self-diagnosing health issues online, where does this leave their doctors?

Join us at MaRS to hear from guest speaker Dr. Wendy Sue Swanson, paediatrician and author of the Seattle Mama Doc blog, as she discusses how doctors can interact more effectively with their patients. Dr. Swanson epitomizes the voice of this new connected generation and is working to ensure that physicians are at the centre of this online dialogue—one tweet, one blog and one email at a time.

Speaker Information

Wendy Sue Swanson is changing the way physicians provide healthcare and she is doing it one tweet, one blog, one email at a time. With a new generation of patients growing up at a time of complete interconnectedness with social networks, the idea that healthcare could be cast aside is proving to be futile. Behavioural change is something that can only happen when people accept, adopt and promote change. Patients are demanding a different way of interacting with their doctors, they are researching, diagnosing and implementing lifestyle changes based on information found online and via social media. Physicians should be at the centre of this dialogue. Wendy Sue Swanson epitomizes the voice of this new generation of physicians and she is driving change.

Known as Seattle’s Mama Doc, Swanson’s blog and Seattle Mama Doc 101 videos are a just an example of how physicians can communicate accurate, science-based information to their patients and the population at large.
Swanson is an engaging speaker. She uses her own life as a doctor, parent, spouse, and daughter to create connection to people and provides a much needed channel for people searching for information about their health. She is an example to follow.
