At Sustainable Development Technology Canada (SDTC), we fund Canadian cleantech projects and coach the companies that lead them. We get ground-breaking technologies to market. SDTC’s mission is to be the Canadian cleantech market-maker.
Funding
SDTC has two different funds that are currently accepting applications.
The SD Tech Fund™ supports projects that address climate change, air quality, clean water and clean soil. The Government of Canada has allocated a total of $915 million for the fund.
The SD Natural Gas Fund™, an offshoot of the SD Tech Fund, supports the development and demonstration of new downstream natural gas technology. It is a collaboration with the Canadian Gas Association (CGA) including up to $15 million from both CGA and the SD Tech Fund™.

Coaching companies for success
SDTC offers innovators support that goes way beyond funding. Working closely with an ever-growing network of stakeholders and partners, SDTC coaches Canadian cleantech companies for success.
Our suite of support services comes into play even before an entrepreneur applies for funding. Through our Virtual Incubator, we offer cleantech entrepreneurs tailored help to form strategic relationships and formalize their business plans, helping to prepare them to apply to one of our funds. We also offer workshops in locations across the country to provide prospective applicants with practical guidance on the application process and evaluation criteria.
Since further financing is essential for the successful commercialization of emerging clean technologies, SDTC’s Follow-on Financing Program helps position SDTC portfolio companies so they can secure financing to assist with the commercialization of their technologies. The funding can be raised during the project or after and the goal is to get the technology to market.
Through our Technology Adoption Program, SDTC actively promotes the use of clean technologies in market sectors throughout Canada and around the world. We work with the private sector to place our funded technologies in real-world situations around the globe.
Through our Export Market Access Program, we work closely with Export Development Canada (EDC), to help our cleantech entrepreneurs get from proven technology to commercial bankability and exportability; and collaborate with the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development (DFATD) and overseas governments to create paths to export markets for Canadian clean technologies.
