On June 10, Altitude Accelerator hosts “Tech Collision Day: Tech Startups Meet Sheridan College Applied Computing Students“.
If you have a business idea and are looking for the expertise to build your technology and take it to the next step, we are bringing together Sheridan College students from the School of Applied Computing with tech clients from Altitude Accelerator, UTM I-Cube, HumberLaunch, Mississauga Business Enterprise Centre (MBEC) and Brampton Entrepreneur Centre in hopes that we can pair great ideas with excellent resources and build new businesses! We’re also bringing in tech experts from our local Microsoft Store to answer all your product-related questions!
Participate in conversations with students from the following programs and receive advice on how to effectively build your idea:
1. Mobile Computing
Mobile computing students are at the forefront of computer science innovation. These students are well-versed in developing software, designing next-generation mobile applications, implementing pervasive information systems and analyzing and planning wireless networks.
2. Systems Analyst
Computer system analysts excel in computer programming and systems design, with an understanding of how businesses function and how technology can be used to make them function better. They are well-versed in Java, C#, XML and .NET as well as web technologies such as HTML5/CSS3/JavaScript/PHP.
3. Information Systems Security
Information systems security professionals are trained in computer security, IS Intrusion detection and prevention, network security, ethical hacking, database security, IS Forensics and Investigation, E-commerce applications and internet security, applied cryptology, malicious code: design and defence, secure programming and security auditing.
4. Technology Support
Students in the Information Technologies Support Services program play a critical role in today’s tech-driven economy by helping end users work effectively with complex hardware, software, networks, websites and other tools. Students are skilled in IT support including customer support, technical writing, project management, corporate training, help-desk supervision, database administration, web design and more.

Philip Stubbs, Associate Dean, Applied Computing – Davis Campus
As one of two Associate Deans of The School Applied Computing, Philip helps lead a team of dedicated faculty who are eagerly participating in the ‘Sheridan Journey’. An avid believer in the value of education, Philip maintains his ties to the students by continuing to teach at least one course each year; it allows him to keep his finger on the pulse of Sheridan and provides perspective in his role as Associate Dean. Prior to his tenure as Associate Dean, Philip was a full time professor teaching a variety of courses including: I.T. Process Management, Systems Design, Systems Auditing and Security.
Joe Varrasso, Associate Dean, Applied Computing – Trafalgar Campus
Joe Varrasso is the Associate Dean of Applied Computing for the Trafalgar Campus. He has previously served as a Professor in Applied Computing and the Program Coordinator for the Computer Systems Technology – Software Development and Network Engineering program.
Brian Pham, Professor, Sheridan College School of Applied Computing
Brian Pham is a Professor in the School of Applied Computing at Sheridan College, where he spends his time and energy preparing and coaching his students for a rewarding and fruitful career in software and IT. Prior to joining Sheridan, he earned his living as a consultant in the software industry, where he learned a thing or two about designing and growing large enterprise software.
When not hanging out with his students, Brian can be found helping his bosses, colleagues, and friends at Sheridan with the design of a new bachelor degree in Data Analytics. He also conducts and advises graduate research work in the School of Computer Science at the University of Guelph, where he is an Adjunct Professor.
Peter Wheeler, Professor, Sheridan College School of Applied Computing
Peter Wheeler joined Sheridan as a continuing education instructor of operating systems in 1998. He joined FAST as a partial-load instructor in 2012, and teaches in the Information Technologies Support Systems (ITSS) program.
Outside of Sheridan, Peter grows wine grapes and raises honeybees on his farm in Prince Edward County. This interest has spilled into the Sheridan curriculum with Capstone projects that include a field application to manage vineyards and apiaries and a strategy game that involves agriculture.
Peter continues to push the envelope of IT administration and project management for ITSS students in the areas of Microsoft server management and tools supporting the agile methodology.
Harsh Thakkar, Professor, Sheridan College School of Applied Computing
Harsh Hiralal Thakkar is a creative IT professional with about 14 years of global experience spanning IT education, corporate training and project management, with recent exposure and specialization in mobile apps and web development. He joined Sheridan College’s Faculty of Applied Science & Technology (FAST) as a part-time professor in the spring of 2013.
Harsh completed his post-graduate degree in management from the prestigious Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in Ahmedabad. (According to the Financial Times’ 2011 ranking, this is the world’s 11th best MBA program.) Prior to that, he acquired his master’s in computer application and his bachelor of science (mathematics).
He has been a certified Project Management Professional (PMP) by PMI since 2004 and a Life Member of the Computer Society of India since 2008. He has also been trained on Capstone® Business Simulation by its founder.
Amandeep Patti, Professor, Sheridan College School of Applied Computing
Amandeep S. Patti is a professor of Applied Computing at Sheridan College. He holds master’s degree in Computer Applications (MCA) and has been working as a dedicated academician since 2004. His teaching experience includes teaching primarily .NET technologies, Databases and Web Application Development. Through his academic experience, he has learned and developed effective ways of engaging his students in the subject matter and also developed excellent communication, organizational and problem solving skills.
As a faculty member at Sheridan College, Amandeep is primarily teaching Software and Web Development courses and helping students during their Capstone projects by imparting his expertise on various Microsoft development technologies.
