Grand Challenges Canada: Vote for ViroCarb’s Life-Saving Medicine against HIV

Funded by the Government of Canada, Grand Challenges Canada is dedicated to supporting bold ideas with big impact in global health.

The Challenge

Massive inequalities in health exist across the globe because of persistent global health challenges. Historically, some of the greatest impacts in global health were from innovators who tried out bold ideas. The discovery of vaccines over 200 years ago and of antibiotics in the last century are classic examples of unorthodox thinking that resulted from bold ideas that have had big impact and saved millions of lives.

The Stars in Global Health program supports bold ideas with big impact from the best and brightest talent, both in Canada and in low- and lower-middle-income countries, to use scientific/technical, social and business innovation to address some of the most pressing global health problems.

The Solution proposed by ViroCarb
Generation of new pan-HIV entry inhibitors to block HIV infection and emergence of drug resistant strains

The essence of the idea:
A conserved target in gp120 of HIV has been overlooked and nature has designed the means to block this target and prevent HIV infection. We can improve on nature to develop a small molecule to block gp120 mediated HIV/T cell binding/fusion/infection.
