In the final installment of the Experts to Entrepreneurs series, Sam Vassa, co-founder and CEO of PaymentEvolution, as well as, founder and CEO of Aviron Interactive, Andy Hoang, discuss their personal journeys in bootstrapping their business.

Key takeaways:

Bootstrapping is business startup on a shoestring and is one of most effective and inexpensive ways to ensure a business’ positive cash flow. It focuses on growing your business through sales as opposed to seeking capital.

PaymentEvolution is a payroll software, benefits, and HR company. In the first half, Sam shares his experience in seeking capital, practicing market driven innovation, and why you should avoid blitzscaling. Some key advice he gives for finance management include creating and tracking a budget, limiting carryover debt, and exclusively using revenue to sustain scaling. Sam also speaks about various tools that were useful both during the early, as well as, the revenue stage of growth for PaymentEvolution.

Andy followed suit with his story about Aviron Interactive, a hybrid hardware and software company with both commercial and home rowing machines. In his section, Andy breaks down the different non-VC channels that he acquired capital from, tips to save capital, what being lucky means to him, and the importance of time management in bootstrapping your business.
